poetics unleashed: kurt eisenlohr

He want’s to see if anyone will notice,
Records the following message on his machine:

I can’t come to the phone right now
because I am dead…

He checks his machine every night,
dropping dimes into a pay-phone
some distance away.
Every night he hears the sound
of his own voice. His message
coming through the small plastic
speaker pressed to his ear.
Saying what it says. Wanting
what it wants. And then a beep.
Followed by nothing at all.

He checks his machine, night
after night. For months.

he stops checking.
